The air in the university’s Great Hall smelled of lemon polish and nervous sweat. It was a scent I had come to associate with the ultimate validation of my existence. At nineteen, my definition of success was narrow, sharp, and silver: it was the first-place trophy for the Inter-Collegiate Policy Debate Championship. I had spent six months preparing for this weekend, oscillating between stacks of peer-reviewed journals and late-night practice rounds that left my throat raw. To me, success was not a process or a mindset; it was a destination that could be measured in points, rankings, and the envious glances of my peers.

I stood in the hallway, adjusting my blazer for the tenth time. My partner, Leo, was flipping through our evidence files with a frantic energy. "If they run the economic stability argument, we switch to the environmental impact turn," he muttered, not looking up. I nodded, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
